Toyota Mini Mirai based on Tamiya chassis – UK’s first hydrogen-fuelled RC car

Meet the Mini Mirai, the UK’s first hydrogen-fuelled remote-controlled (RC) car, based on the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai bigger brother. But why, and more importantly, how, you might ask?

Before we answer those questions for you, take a look for yourself at our Mini Mirai in action as we went for a spin around Old New Inn Model Village in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. Could there be a more appropriate setting to showcase this UK first?

Why miniaturise the Mirai?

Being at the forefront of hydrogen technology, Toyota wanted to showcase the potential for hydrogen to be used in multiple, slightly more novel ways. Toyota has already made a name for itself in terms of hydrogen power, with more than 20 years of hydrogen research and development which led to the launch of its first production fuel-cell car in 2015, the first generation Mirai. Continuing to pioneer fuel cell technology and following this year’s launch of the all-new Mirai, Toyota is increasing its fuel cell production ten-fold to 30,000 units a year. This will enable the expansion of fuel cell technology into broader forms of transport and haulage, as well as industrial energy applications.

How did we create it?

In order to create our one-off Mini Mirai, we enlisted help from Bramble Energy, a company specialising in miniature hydrogen applications, and the Tamiya model company. For the body, Tamiya used their expertise to create a 1/10 scale replica of the new Mirai hydrogen saloon with one of Tamiya’s popular TT-02 RC cars used as the starting point. In order to achieve a striking resemblance to the full-sized Mirai saloon, every inch of the vehicle was surveyed, with even the colour of the Mini Mirai (Scarlet Flare) being an exact replica of the real car.

1. Hydrogen manifold, 2. Hydrogen inlet pipe, 3. Electronics control board, 4. Hydrogen regulator, 5. Hydrogen gas storage, 6. Fuel cell power terminal, 7. Battery pack, 8. PCBFC fuel cell range extender, 9. Voltage regulator, 10. Rear shock absorber, 11. Bespoke body-shell

For the hydrogen fuel cell system, Bramble Energy fitted a miniaturised version of its printed circuit board fuel cell (PCBFC) system, a control system and hydrogen storage, into the standard four-wheel drive RC chassis – the exact same one that is readily available in model shops before the Tamiya Mirai body shell was fitted on top. The Mini Mirai is fitted with two hydrogen fuel canisters that are switchable, allowing for quick replacement when fuel runs out. The Bramble Energy system provides around 20 Watts of power, with double the running time capacity compared to a conventional battery-powered RC car.

Just like its full-size sibling, the RC model excels when it comes to driving range. The new Mirai can cover up to 400 miles on a tank of hydrogen. The Mini Mirai can cover twice the distance of an equivalent, conventional battery-powered RC car.

Announcement of the 81th Tamiya Pachi Contest winning work

A contest “click” with photos of AFV models. This time, the 81st time, the new Panzer IV won the gold medal in both categories. Mr. Yoshida’s work in the scene photography section is a combination of the Panzer IV F type and the German infantry set. A neat and clean paint finish while being assembled straight. The screen composition that considers the height difference and perspective naturally blends in with the background. Mr. Minami in the work photography category won the award for the Panzer IV G type. The slightly bluish German gray body is produced with realistic dirty paint. It is beautifully organized as a photo. This year’s applicants are 140 people aged 7 to 70. In recent years, not only regulars but also new participants are increasing. The deadline for applications for the click contest is September 1st every year. When the model work is completed, the next step is to click with the camera. Please finish it as a photographic work. We look forward to your masterpiece.

【gold medal】 [Author] Shigehiro Yoshida (63) Aichi [Title] Standby [Scale] 1/35 This time, I made a diorama with the image of the 14th tank division waiting in front of the bridge when invading Russia. Infantry are installed using the height difference in front of the pier, and the layout is designed to give a sense of unity with the Panzer IV. The shooting was outdoors, and I focused on the infantry with a sense of perspective. The bridge was made of balsa wood and the vehicle was painted in straight bluish German gray.

It was the US military that controlled the German supply facility, but it is said that it had already been taken out of supplies. I think that I was able to take an image in which the background and diorama matched more than I expected in the scene work with the building that makes me feel the history of this place in the background. I imagined a scene where conversations such as “Be careful! There are tigers and leopards that fill their stomachs and sharpen their fangs!”

Murder I was finished with only some additional work on the details. Shooting is done indoors with few restrictions.

I wanted to create a rugged atmosphere, so I replaced it with a commercially available winter track and removed the fender at the back so that my eyes could face the track. Also, although it was assembled with North African specifications, German gray was selected for painting so that the weathering would shine. The dust adhering to the car body was made to look faint by using a peeling liquid, and rubble, bricks, dead grass, etc. were placed on the fender.

I made it with the idea of finishing Leclerc more coolly. Particle material was applied to the anti-slip parts in various places to give it a texture, and dust and dirt accumulated there were applied to make it the highlight of the work. The painting is entirely brush painting. The camouflage area uses a rubbing brush to rub a small amount of paint on a thin surface to create a smooth border. I took a picture with a single focus lens.

[Author] Junya Sato (53) Fukuoka [Title] German Marder III M [Scale] 1/35
I made it because I wanted to paint it like a box picture. The camouflage color is adjusted with reference to the painting drawing. The modification is that the clamp handle of the equipment was added using etched parts and the upper seat of the car body was machined with epoxy putty. In addition, the camouflage uses Dutch flowers, and I tried to place it in the center of the front of the car body with the image of ambushing in the forest of Normandy.

Previous year winning works

The Hotshot 4WD makes a new appearance – In a comical way – Building the Tamiya 58685 Comical Hotshot GF-01CB

After we were so enthusiastic about the first Tamiya 4WD comical model, the “Comical Avante GF-01CB”, it was almost natural to take a closer look at the new “Comical Hotshot”. For us, the “Comical Avante” is one of the most beautiful models in the Comical series, along with the “Comical Grasshopper”. The original Hotshot, the first Tamiya 4WD buggy ever, is of course more than predestined as a template for the “Comical Series”. Especially due to the narrow and flat design of the original classic buggy. As with the Avante, we also customized and tuned the Hotshot a bit, according to our ideas. We stayed original with the body, as it is pre-painted red in the kit, as was previously the case with the Avante. But an unpainted body set is now available from Tamiya, and comes with No. 51657.With this, you can also create your own paint scheme.

Normally we use the excellent Tamiya GF-01 54670 dampers for these fun models. But they are blue anodized, and not really a good match. And in my opinion, the original red CVA dampers are optically not that perfect. That’s why I chose the virtually identical Tamiya 54541 CC-01 Hop Up damper set this time. The golden aluminum shock caps make them a perfect match for the bright red of the Hotshot. I´m still not totally happy with the colour of the standard wheels. But that´s complaining on a very high level. A gold plated wheel would be perfect here.

Unfortunately there is no driver figure included with the “Comical Hotshot” kit. Under the relatively narrow Hotshot body there is actually very little space for it. In a supplement, Tamiya explains how you can at least accommodate the head of the beautiful 54864 driver figure which was created by “pdc designworks”. With the help of a Lexan bracket. Of course we followed this suggestion, and with it there comes a lot more “life” into our little racer. Oh, and one more thing we left out on “Comical Avante”. LED lights on the front of the bumper and on the body. And of course also red taillights. Looks great, and so realistic.

Otherwise, we have relied on the tried and tested parts that we have already used in our „Comical Avante. A complete list can be found at the end of this report. As expected, the little red racer drives just wonderfully. And with a little practice, all kinds of stunts and tricks are no problem. There is hardly a Tamiya RC model that is more fun.
We are already looking forward to the next comical model. Our team would love to see a “Comical Subaru Brat”. Let´s go Tamiya. Make it happen!

This is a list of genuine Tamiya Hop Up parts, we´ve used on this car:
54924 GF-01 Ball Bearing Set
50808 TG10 Long Wheel Axle
53509 Hard Flourine Coated 0.6 Aluminum Pinion (20T/F201)

How to make your own polycarbonate body video – example Tamiya Comical Celica GF-01CB

I tried to make it like a factory tour how the comical Celica body made by Otsukai Chaly was made.
This time, the VR character (self-made avatar) Suzu-chan explains.
Large Celica is vacuum formed by making a wooden pattern from 3D CAD.
It is a full scratch build body (self-made body).
Dedicated mirrors, grilles and hubcaps are made of elaborate chemical wood.

A clever scheme built in time lapse – Tamiya Lancia Stratos Dragon

Click on the link to watch the build video in YouTube.

This is a time lapse build of a custom Tamiya Super Storm Dragon adapted into a Lancia Stratos Rally buggy concept. At the end of the video I show the complete results. Of the Tamiya Grasshopper chassis, the Super Storm Dragon (SSD) body in it’s box art form is my least favorite—but I’m sure it’s relevant and admirable to fans of the ‘80s Japanese manga/anime RC series where the Storm Dragon originated from. I also feel the body is too long for the chassis but perhaps that was the intent. It’s probably supposed to represent a slender mythological Eastern Asian dragon but all I can see is Falkor from the Neverending Story. However, I do like the greenhouse (windshield). Whenever I see it one thing comes to mind—the Lancia Stratos HF from the 1970s.

I wonder if the illustrators of the SSD got inspiration from the Stratos, if they did I wouldn’t be surprised. The Italian Stratos came out in the ‘70s and was purely developed and designed for the World Rally Championship. Designed at Bertone by Marcello Gandini (he also did the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, and De Tomaso Pantera to name a few). Timeline wise, the SSD came out in the early ‘80s and that Stratos’ greenhouse was already an iconic thing. I always thought if an SSD fell on my lap I would frankenstein it into a buggy version of the Stratos. And so over a year ago I came across an SSD on sale for about $86 USD and I couldn’t pass it up.

I didn’t want to slap stickers and call it a day. I wanted to at least have a little effort in translating it. The SSD body was trimmed and shortened (the Stratos has a relatively short body/wheelbase). I wanted to stay within the rally Stratos color palette and that also meant a careful selection of the parts and electronics color.

Since I don’t have any off-road track in my area I knew this would run on tarmac or very abrasive surfaces. I installed a Tamiya Super Stock RZ (on-road 23T, 27k RPM) and at least had to upgrade the stock rear dampers with big bore ones (plus 500 damper oil and hard springs) and compress the front springs for a stiffer ride. The rear suspension axle mount was replaced with an aluminum one that can accommodate the beefier dampers. In addition, a longer 8mm T4 Works rear billet aluminum hanger was added with a makeshift mount/brace to lock the rear suspension in place—just like the Grasshopper’s. I feel the Grasshopper performs better on flat surfaces vs the Hornet due to the rear suspension design—the SSD has the Hornet’s. The front arms and suspension brace were upgraded to aluminum, the servo saver/steering rod was replaced with T4works aluminum servo saver and steel turnbuckles. Of course the plastic bushings were all replaced with metal ball bearings. The result is very apparent when running it. It’s quite stable, runs straight and fast, and the suspension just right (not as bouncy). A few caveats: because the front suspension is set very low and the aluminum arms/knuckles are not adjustable, it has more negative camber than I would like. That would probably be an area I would fine tune in the future. The aluminum arms creates some rattling noise as it doesn’t have a snug fit. I think adding rubber sleeves on the connection points to the chassis might solve it. To further improve handling, I need to replace the tires (didn’t have the right ones when I did a test run). And for the first time I tried a Dynamite ESC and I think it’s a tad glitchy. With some more fine tuning work, this setup can be quite a serious basher.

All this work and parts are not to just add bling. I genuinely wanted to find out what the potential of this iconic beginner chassis is. Ironically, I think it’s not worth it if you just want a simple basher (at least on tarmac/flat surfaces). If you’re going to “casually” run this on flat hard surfaces, I wouldn’t bother with this Hornet/Storm Dragon chassis. I highly recommend going a step down and getting a Grasshopper instead. I’ve built a Grasshopper for someone and tried a variety of motors in it (380, Sport Tuned 380, 540 silver can, and Torque Tuned 540) and once we got to the Torque Tuned motor, it was lively, fun, just right, and relatively precise. In fact, I love how the Torque Tuned Grasshopper drives that I can’t wait to drive it again. However, this Stratos Dragon evolution definitely has more potential.

Modified trucks based on the Tamiya 1/14 RC trucks driving huge distances in convoys

One of our readers kindly sent us photos and details about their hobby project based on Tamiya 1/14 RC trucks which we gladly publicise here:

I am happy I can show you our project. We did start Trucking 3-4 years ago, mainly we use them just as support vehicle for our tank battle days, recovery or just as spare part supply trucks in the fields. Surely sounds strange but our playground is always relatively far away from the parking place so the trucks help us. Than a cheap truck brand showed up and I wanted to test it what is possible with it and start a walk but mostly it did break down after 4km. After a wile some of our tank battle friends showed up to and the first Konvoi was made about 10km.

Some of us got heavy problems with the feets so we did break of after 60km. That was a pain, but we also had a lot of failures, but now we are 300% better than last year so I think it could be successfull in 5 weeks.
Here you can find our website and most of our trucks listed https://www.ludwigs-hobby-seite.de/Konvoi%20Projekt%20Bochum%20Salzkotten.html or here in Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Konvoi-Bochum-Salzkotten-2020-107063594122942/. If you have questions or want to hear more stories of our trails let me knew. Our drives are normally: 10km for technical measurements, 30 and 40 km for conditional training and long term tests. So it becomes a join between marathon sports and modelling lol but that’s whats make it so impressive and challenging for us. I can tell everyone, just to try it. Surely old guys trailing with little truck looks funny, but all kids love us and most of the people we meet on the trails.
