Release commemoration event of Tamiya 14133 1/12 Yamaha YZF-R1M

On September 22, at the Tamiya Plastic Model Factory in Shimbashi, a development staff talk show was held to commemorate the release of the plastic model “1/12 scale model Yamaha YZF-R1M”. The staff of YZF-R1 development staff and Tamiya who developed the plastic model appeared at the venue, and entertained the plastic model fan and the motorcycle fan with a talk which can only be heard here.

Tamiya’s “1/12 YZF-R1M”, which began selling around September 15th, is a plastic model that faithfully reproduced the top model of the current 8th YZF-R1.

YZF-R1, the eighth generation who completed the full model change in 2015, renewed its development concept from the “fastest winding road” to the “earliest” circuit. Yamaha’s MotoGP machine YZR-M1 technology is abundantly included.

In the race, Suzuka 8 hours endurance road race which is the biggest bike race in Japan, he is active in achieving the 4th consecutive win from 2015 to 2018 when his eighth debut.

The talk show was held in two-part system, and in one copy, Mr. Hirano Hirano, development manager of YZF-R1, Mr. Isao Sakata who is a designer of the 8th YZF-R1 appeared. The development story of the eighth YZF-R1 and the story behind the design and so on flared, and the fans gathered interestedly.

Talk show

In addition to Mr. Hirano and Mr. Sakata in 2 copies, Mr. Shigeki Araki of Tamiya who developed the YZF-R1’s plastic model is on stage. The topic moves to the story behind model development.

“1/12 YZF-R1M” is reproduced not only to the detail of the car body but also to the internal structure that removed the cowl and tank. The display contents of the instrument panel and the “R1” logo engraved on the swing arm are almost the same as those of the actual car.

Mr. Araki said that there were various difficulties to achieve this.

In model development, Mr. Araki who gathered the actual car at the Yamaha Community Plaza was surprised to see the internal structure of the cowl removed, so that he could feel “fine, how I should design”.

About the difficult point in model design Mr. Araki says that “designing the model based on the fact that the cowl must be fixed on the internal structure.”

“When compared with the actual photographs, there are considerably different parts of contents, but when actually assembling up, I think that it is in the form close to genuine, such as position lamps.”

Although the fine parts such as the harness are omitted in the model, the thin position lamp and the frame part of the front are mistaken as genuine as they are omitted. Mr. Hirano and Mr. Sakata, who saw the internal structure of the completed model, were surprised laughing with too much repeatability.

Moreover, the shape of the cross plane engine which is the feature of YZF – R1 and the fine shape of the step are also designed using 3D CAD. At the venue, figures created during design were also shown.

Finally, Mr. Araki talks about his thought to the plastic model as follows.

“I expressed it to feel the material of each part as well, for example, tanks, cowls, engines, etc. have been made of various materials. We are designing it as a model that can express actual performance while expressing such place ”

“I think that you can organize it while thinking that (YZF-R1) has this structure”

The talk show will be delivered on YouTube’s Tamiya official channel as well. If you make a model while listening to the contents of the talk show, you may be able to feel the commitment of the developer more.

Also, works of Yamaha Modeler ‘s Club were also exhibited at the venue. Some of the works also appeared using LEDs to emit headlights using LEDs.

Tamiya NSU TT – the little rocket from Neckarsulm

Time for another TamiyaBlog build. We love the Tamiya M-Chassis series a lot. And over the years, I´ve collected myself nearly all of them. From M-01/02 to the actual M-05/06 and M-07. Especially the classic Tamiya M-chassis bodies are close to my heart. The NSU TT suits perfectly into the range like the Abarth 1000 TCR, Alfa Giulia GTA, Mini Cooper, Alpine A110, and Honda S800. Tamiya´s NSU TT “Jägermeister” Version is the one used by ” Willi Bergmeister” from 1974, the winning car of the 1974 “Bergmeister” Championship. Unfortunately, Willi´s name is not placed on the car, maybe due to licensing issues. The NSU was very succesfull in “Bergrennen”, during the 60´s und 70´s, and fought against Fiat Abarth, Alfas, and Alpine A110, only to name a few. And the scene is still alive. Some enthusiasts kept their cars, and you can still see them on smaller “Bergrennen” today.

The Tamiya body is, as always, a very well reproduction of the original car, but it sits on the M-05 chassis, which is front wheel drive. The original NSU Prinz and his TT and TTS versions where RWD cars. So we thought it would be much better to place the body on a nice M-06 Pro chassis, i had for a while. The body sits well on the M-06. There is enough space under the TT body for the M-06 rear motor. The wheels of the Tamiya NSU kit are “borrowed” from the Abarth 1000 TCR. They suit the car well, but i wished Tamiya would have made some new wheels for the NSU. The original “Spiess” wheels from the 1970´s, which were used on the original car, looked so cool.

Anyway, we took what we had, and put some nice “Pit Shimizu” racing tires on our Abarth wheels. They are of great quality, and i hope, with their soft compound, they will help to give the little NSU some great grip on the rear.

To add some more details to our cute little racer, we had the chance to build the body with the prototype of the new light bucket kit from well know german Tamiya dealer TAMICO, which is available from now on. In this kit, a front and rear LED holder is included. This will give the body the final touch, and looks really great.

We hope Tamiya will bring some more classic racing car bodies for the M-Chassis series in the future. We still hope for the classic Lotus Europe, which was available from Tamiya as an 1/24 static kit.

But for now on, enjoy the NSU TT !
