Yamato’s Final Battle “Operation Kikusui Box” to be released in July

Shizuoka Model Teaching Materials Cooperative offers the 1/700 Waterline Series, which features a lineup of 230 ships from World War II to the latest ships. Even the world’s largest battleship, Yamato, is reproduced in a compact size of 367 mm in length, and the style of omitting the bottom of the ship below the waterline makes it ideal for collections.

On the afternoon of April 6, 1945, the last fleet of the Japanese Navy set out from off the coast of Tokuyama, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in Operation Kikusui, which was a plan to launch a general attack on the Allied forces that had begun landing on Okinawa and to support kamikaze operations by army and navy aircraft by sending in the remaining surface ships. The battleship Yamato, which had been preserved as a trump card, was used as the flagship to form the First Striking Force, with the light cruiser Yahagi and eight destroyers Fuyutsuki, Suzutsuki, Asashimo, Hatsushimo, Kasumi, Isokaze, Hamakaze, and Yukikaze. Just after noon on April 7th, a relentless wave attack by more than 300 aircraft, including dive bombers and torpedo bombers, took off from 12 American aircraft carriers, continued for over two hours, and the Yamato, which had been hit by a concentrated torpedo attack on its port side, sunk into the sea off Cape Bonin with a huge explosion and mushroom cloud.

300 plastic models presented to “I Love Shizuoka Council” as prizes for stamp rally

Plastic model manufacturers presented plastic models to the I Love Shizuoka Council, which promotes the revitalisation of the city centre of Shizuoka City.
The gifts were presented by three plastic model manufacturers who are members of the Shizuoka Model and Teaching Material Cooperative and have their headquarters in Shizuoka City or Tsu City.
Chairman Shunsaku of Taya and other representatives delivered 300 plastic models to the council.
The plastic models will be used as prizes in a stamp rally to be held in conjunction with the Hobby Clothing Awards next month.
Shizuoka is known as the ‘City of Plastic Models’ and there is a desire for many people to be exposed to plastic models.
This initiative is also expected to help promote Shizuoka as a ‘manufacturing town’.
At the presentation ceremony, smiles were exchanged as people said, ‘We have so many to sell, thank you very much’.
This is an example of cooperation between local manufacturers and community groups that links plastic model culture with local events and town revitalisation.
